Short summary
We used genetic sequencing to map the microbes living on a nearly extinct New Caledonian palm, of which only one adult tree survives. We found that disease symptoms are linked to a group of harmful fungi acting together, rather than a single pathogen. Our results show that tracking whole microbial communities can quickly reveal hidden disease risks and guide targeted protection measures for critically endangered plants.
