Using eDNA to study fish communities in river–lake systems is a new, cost-effective method. Our study found that water eDNA might miss some fish living in the sediment. Fish communities in rivers and lakes are quite similar, showing how connected these systems are. The environment, especially temperature, influences the genetic signals found in water and sediment. This research sheds light on the effectiveness of eDNA in understanding aquatic ecosystems.

Larvae of phantom midges are very sensitive to some pesticides, and populations can be severely affected by relatively low doses. The number of generations these flies produce each year is critical to their potential to recover from pesticide exposure, but this information has not been confirmed precisely. We found strong evidence that one species of phantom midge can have at least four generations per year. This evidence can be used to improve regulatory assessment of pesticides.

Many factors can facilitate the coexistence of species that feed on the same resource and occupy the same niche. In this work, we saw that different feeding strategies adopted by curimatid fish promote differences in detritus consumption. This point may be essential for the detritivores to be one of the most representative and abundant trophic groups in rivers and floodplain environments in the Amazon.

In this work the effects of warming on phytoplankton communities was investigated. An indoor experiment was performed in which water from a Mediterranean lagoon was incubated at different temperatures. A shift towards smaller taxa resulted in a higher total biomass but lower chlorophyll a concentrations at the highest temperature. This study contributes to the knowledge on the responses of phytoplankton to warming, which is still scarce in Mediterranean marine and brackish environments.

The identification of potential zones for offshore wind farm development is a delicate and multifaceted procedure. For this aim, a holistic approach has been adopted integrating technical and environmental criteria related to the offshore wind energy exploitation. The integration is made feasible through the Smart Wind Chart that aims to maintain and secure the sustainable blue growth in the Mediterranean Sea through the support of offshore wind energy projects and marine habitat conservation.
